Does the google "sandbox" really exist?

There is SO MUCH debate everywhere, all over the internet, as to whether a brand new website will be put in the “sandbox”, that is, it will not be able to rank highly for a period of time until it’s established.  Well I can say from personal experience that there is not such thing as the “sandbox”.
The reason I know is because I registered www.whitneysrandomblog.com (my new blog address), and within a day I was already ranking very high for some of my keywords.  As soon as my domain was live I began building backlinks and submitted a sitemap to Google so that it would be crawled and indexed faster.
One thing I’m sure of, is that you NEED BACKLINKS, and lots of em.  Start building them immediately, and keep it steady every day if possible.   Google love steady links, because they look more natural.  I hope this clears up the confusion for all of you about Google’s mythical “sandbox”.
