What are some of the best white hat seo practices that you can actually put into action today and get more search traffic? I’ll go over the main ones…and remember, these are “white hat”, meaning that they are safe and will NOT get you penalized by Google.
The first thing you should do is find relevant, targeted keywords that have to do with the content of your website and the product you are offering. This means keywords that have low competition, and high search volume. You can use the Web CEO free online keyword tool, or the Google Adwords Keyword Tool for this if you get stuck.
The next logical step would be to place your keywords into your website..throughout the page. MODERATELY! You don’t need to include the same keyword more than 3 times for ever 100 words! Having your keywords on your page too much will get you penalized by Google, and possibly other search engines as well.
Once you find your main keyword, try to find related keywords that you can also include in your copy. BE SURE to include your keyword at the very beginning and very end of your website (in the footer).
The next thing is, to put your keywords into heading tags on your page (H1, H2, H3) etc. If you don’t know what heading tags are you should probably go look that up right now, because explaining it is outside the scope of this article. The H1 tags are the most important, so if you have your keyword in the H1 tags and no other heading tags on your page, then that is sufficient.
Write good, unique content. This one is a no-brainer if you are passionate about your topic. Don’t ever copy content from other websites, and make your articles a decent length, at least 300 words is best.
Build links naturally. This means do not use automated methods of building links, unless you do it in moderation. You don’t need more than a couple hundred links a day, and even that is a lot. Comment on blogs, forums, use social bookmarking, etc. There are tons of ways to build links, research them.
Bold your keywords on your page. Pick your main keyword and bold it only once on your page. Only have 1 bolded keyword per page.
Try to focus each blog post/article/page on only one main keyphrase, then it will be alot easier and Google will know what to rank you for.
Use Meta Tags. Make your title and description sound natural, and don’t stuff them with keywords, but do include your main keyphrase in them, and once is enough. Some search engines still use the meta keywords tag, so go ahead and use it too.
DON’T USE HIDDEN TEXT! Such as, stuffing your keywords into your page and blending them in with the background color of your page, this is an easy way to get penalized or even banned by Google.
Interlink your webpages….link from one blog post to another, and ideally have an archives widget or tag cloud so Google can reach your categories easier.
Submit a sitemap to Google that includes all of your pages, this way they can find and index all of your pages.
Most importantly, use only White hat seo techniques – NO BLACK HAT! White hat is the only way to ensure good, long term rankings.
These are the main things you should do to obtain high Google rankings. Implement all or most of them if you can, and I guarantee they will get you results. Keep in mind that backlinks help a lot.
